Nice smallmouth caught by wildlife artist,
Rod Crossman.
Rod Crossman again, #4 Olive Scuplin. Rod said that he caught 54 smallmouth in one day in 2006 on a #6 Olive Sculpin while being guided by Derrick Filkins of Fly Masters of Indianapolis.
Myself, Fox Statler, with a 21 1/2 inch female smallmouth on a #6 Olive Sculpin.
This is our first DVD. It lacks the cute cover, classic case, and accompanying handsome host that other DVD's have. All of this just drives the price up. We thought about adding background music, like "I Thought I Saw a Froggy Do a Hoochy-Koochy Dance" or Enya's "Memory of Trees", but since this is the sculpin pattern that was published in the March, 2004 issue of Fly Fisherman Magazine, we decided that what Fox had to say about building a sculpin fly is more important. We didn't add a fishing episode either. Heck all flies catch fish, the better ones just do a better job of it, and this is a better ones.
Not only does the River-Bottom-Colored Sculpin fly look anatomically correct, it also swims and behaves like a real sculpin. The pectoral fin actually collapse back against the body when it swims and the tail wiggle like a swimming fish. The materials used to tie this sculpin are not buoyant materials like deer hair, instead, synthetic materials that are easily colored by permanent marker pens, fine tough durable fibers, and soak up water like a wash-rag. The River-Bottom-Colored Sculpin finds the bottom of the river faster than other traditional patterns because it uses lead eyes, lead wire, plus non-buoyant materials The pattern is a true upright clouser minnow style. Even sculpins tied as small as #8's or as big as #2's are upright in the stiffest current and when walking the bottom over rocks and debris. The pattern doesn't spin during the retrieve or fast current like patterns that incorporate stiff church-window pheasant feathers for pectoral fins. The suggested hook, a Mustad #33903 pencil popper hook, is foraged for strength and has a quality hook point. Rod Crossman stated that the River-Bottom-Colored Sculpin is the most durable pattern that he has ever fished. Last year, Rod caught 54 smallmouth in one day on a #6 sculpin - he brought it along this year to fish again. This sculpin pattern is a killer for trout, smallmouth, walleye, and other cold water predators especially if the sculpin minnow lives within the river. The sculpin pattern is easy to tie and with practice it trims up to the most lifelike looking sculpin most anglers has ever seen. It has been called a masterpiece of realism by several great tiers.
What's in this DVD anyway? How about an "Introduction: Why You Should Tie This Fly", then "Hooks, Eyes, and Lead Wire", plus "Suggested Color Combinations", and "Tying Tools". Then Fox ties the fly from tail to nose and then trimming to painting it. Lastly, "Tips; An Observation. Tying the sculpin has a separate chapter for each step in the pattern, that way you can review a step over and over again. We filled a 4.7GB DVD containing about 50 minutes of ultra-fine quality video with as much knowledge as we could on Fox's River-Bottom-Colored Sculpin. So what are you waiting for, buy the DVD and learn to tie Fox's sculpin.
