Distribution: Found in all the large streams throughout the Mississippi drainage. All the Great Lakes and their tributaries, the Hudson River drainage and north.
Habitat: Prefers the open-water of channels of large streams to large rivers of moderate to low gradient. It is found on a large range of bottoms and is tolerant of turbidity. Found in the midwater to the surface in the water column. Avoids upland streams like those within the Ozarks.
Spawning Period: May to July
Spawning Habitat: At night over shallow sand to firm mud bottoms.
Important Notes: This now the most abundant minnow in the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Feeds at the surface to the midwater of streams.
