Arkansas Scud

Fox's Mudbugs
Fox's Mudbugs are a unique crawfish, crawdad, or manta shrimp imitation. They are heavy enough to be cast by both fly and spin fishermen. They catch all species of fish in both fresh and saltwater. The position of the eyes make them an extremely stable crawfish pattern. You can crawl them over boulder, gravel, bedrock ledges, logs, brush, mud or sand. Their eyes make lots of racket every time they hit the bottom. Smallmouth will often move more than 20 feet to strike them. One of my favorite still-water tactics is to cast them in the edge of the water or on the bank and them slow-roll or finger-crawl them into the deeper water. I use this same tactic in rivers and streams, but I let the force of the current on the fly line drag them into the deeper water. Raise and lower the fly line to move the Mudbug faster or slower in the current. Spirit River ties the Mudbugs on a #4 streamer hook in either Olive or Chocolate Brown.
